A Slow Weekend in Broken Bow

A two-night itinerary for couples, with a little adventure and a warm welcome back.

The bags are down, the coffee is ready for tomorrow, and there’s nowhere you need to be for a while. That first evening at the cabin is a good place to begin.

A two-night getaway in Broken Bow and Hochatown gives you time for a morning in the woods, a few local stops, and an evening that stretches from dinner to one more record. With Hearth & Heritage as your home base, here’s how the weekend might unfold.

Day One: Arrive, unpack, and ease into the evening

Check-in begins at 4 p.m. Give yourself a little time to settle in before heading back out. Put the groceries away, have a look around, and claim a spot on the swing daybed. After the drive, it feels good to sit still for a moment.

When you’re ready for dinner, Grateful Head Pizza Oven & Tap Room is our first-night pick. It’s a local standout, and the Hochatown location is only about two to three minutes from the cabin. Pizza makes an easy start to the weekend: something to share, very little planning, and no kitchen cleanup waiting afterward. If you’d prefer dinner at the cabin, check their current ordering options and bring it back with you.

Back at Hearth & Heritage, put on a record and let the evening find its own pace. You might settle into the living room for a while, draw a bath in the indoor soaking tub, or step outside for a hot-tub soak when the weather allows. Tomorrow has room for exploring. Tonight can be as simple as dinner and a little time together.

Day Two: Coffee, the woods, and an afternoon in Hochatown

Start slowly, then head to Beavers Bend

Make breakfast at the cabin and take your coffee out to the swing daybed. There’s no need to hurry through the part of the morning you came here to enjoy.

Once you’re ready to go, make Beavers Bend State Park your first outing. A walk or hike gives the day a lovely change of scenery: trees overhead, a trail ahead, and time to talk without looking at a screen.

Friends Trail is one of the hikes in our guest guide. It has rocky stretches and some climbing, so bring shoes you’re comfortable hiking in and a bottle of water. If you’d rather take a gentler walk, use the park’s trail maps and current information to choose a route that suits you. The point is to enjoy being out there, whether that means a longer hike or a shorter wander.

Leave a little time for the lake views at Beavers Bend.

If the lake is what’s calling you, swap the hike for time on Broken Bow Lake. Beavers Bend Marina is a place to start for boat rentals; arrange your rental ahead and check the weather policies. Give the lake a generous part of the day, with lunch afterward.

For a more adventurous morning, you could book Rugaru Adventures instead. Its guided zipline tour travels through the forest and over the lake, with roughly two hours devoted to the experience. Book ahead, wear closed-toe shoes, and review the operator’s participation requirements. Follow it with lunch and a quieter afternoon back at the cabin.

Linger over lunch and a local stop

After a morning outdoors, come back into Hochatown for lunch. This is a good time to keep things casual and see what you feel like doing next.

If you’re in the mood for a tasting, Girls Gone Wine has a Hochatown location where you can sample wine and browse the gift shop. Or spend a little time over a local beer on the patio at Beavers Bend Brewery. Either makes a pleasant afternoon stop before heading back. Check current hours and tasting arrangements, and plan your ride before drinking.

Leave yourself some daylight at the cabin. Take off your walking shoes, put on another record, and settle onto the swing daybed with a book. Or close your eyes for a while. An afternoon nap fits very comfortably into this itinerary.

Make dinner part of the evening

For dinner out, consider Abendigo’s Grill & Patio in Hochatown. Check its opening days for your stay and make a reservation if that’s the evening you have in mind.

For dinner in, stop at Mountain Man Meat Market earlier in the day. It’s our recommendation for steaks and other meats, take-home meals, and specialty groceries. Pick up something for the grill and a few easy sides, then spend the evening cooking together. The cabin’s plumbed gas grill and kitchen make it easy to keep the meal simple while still setting the table for an occasion.

Afterward, take the evening outside to the patio fireplace, or enjoy the firepit when weather and local restrictions allow. There’s time to linger before turning in. Keep music soft as the evening gets later; neighborhood quiet hours begin at 11 p.m.

Day Three: One more coffee before the drive home

Save breakfast ingredients for your last morning. With checkout at 10 a.m., a little packing the night before gives you time to enjoy your coffee and finish breakfast without rushing.

Follow the checkout instructions, gather the things that somehow spread themselves through the cabin, and take one last look at the trees. You’ve had a little adventure, a few good meals, and time to enjoy each other’s company. That’s a lovely amount to fit into two nights.

If rain changes the plan

Trade the trail for a leisurely breakfast and a few rounds of a board game. Later, Gutter Chaos offers standard and duckpin bowling, games, and food if you feel like going out. Check its opening days and lane availability before heading over.

Back at the cabin, the indoor soaking tub, fireplace, and record player give a rainy afternoon its own appeal. Make something warm in the kitchen and watch the weather from inside. Keep lake trips, ziplining, and outdoor soaks for suitable conditions.
